Segons l’Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya (www.idescat.es),
actualitzades a 31.12.2000, al Principat de Catalunya, hi ha 2.125 persones
que porten Vergés com primer cognom, i 2.208 com segon, sobre un total
de 6.262.000 habitants. Les comarques catalanes amb percentatge més alt
d’aquest cognom són l’Aran, la Garrotxa, el Ripollès, i el Pla
de l’Estany. Això no inclou els Vergés dels altres països
catalans (València, Balears, Catalunya francesa, Alguer,...) ni de la
resta del món. Altres variants ortogràfiques del cognom són
minoritàries al Principat: Bergés (523/542), Bargués (202/195),
Verger (35/25), i Vergez (4/6). La variant Vergez sovinteja a França,
per influència de l’ortografia i la fonètica franceses. Podeu

La Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana inclou tretze entrades de personalitats
que porten Vergés com primer cognom:
Un personatge del drama de W. Shakespeare "Much ado about nothing" (1600) és l’agutzil Verges. L’acció se situa a Messina (que, com tota Sicília, fou catalana un llarg període des de 1282) i transcorre a la cort del "Prince Don Pedro of Arragon", comte de Barcelona (1276-1285). Shakespeare posa en boca del "veí" Verges aquesta facècia, que potser puguem considerar com el nostre retrat col.lectiu (Act III, Scene V): "Yes, I thank God, I am as honest as any man living, that is an old man, and no honester than I". [En efecte, gràcies a Déu, sóc tant honest com el que més que sigui tant vell com jo i no més honest.]
És un cognom català o occità. Etimològicament prové del llatí "viridiarium" (=arbreda, bosquet). Se’n deriva el mot català comú, "verger", plural "vergers". ([cfr. Diccionari IEC: m. "Hort amb varietat de flors i arbres fruiters. Jardí contigu a la casa"]. En occità-gascó: "vergèr". En occità-lenguadocià "vergièr". En castellà "vergel". El predomini del plural en els patronímics sembla deure’s a que els horts freqüentment són parcel·lats i agrupats, del que n’és testimoni la toponímia (per exemple, "Camin des uarts", a Betren; "Mas dels vergers", a Clairà).
Com s’ha dit més abans, el singular "Verger" és nom de llinatge als països catalans. Però no "Vergers", que adopta la forma "Vergés", la més freqüent de totes. Son minoritàries les variants Bergés, Bargés; i Vercher (València). La forma "Vergez" és exclusiva de França, on s’introduí a rel de la Revolució, transformant el sufix -s en -z per conservar en les zones francòfones la pronunciació oxítona "Vergés".

El francès "berger" deriva del llatí "verdix" (=ovella) >
berdix (ovella); berdicarius (oveller) > bergarius >
berger (oveller, pastor).
Del plural "bergers", deriven patronímics francesos sense cap relació amb "Vergés". Hi ha d’altres noms de família paral·lels: en català "oveller", "vaquer", "bover", etc; en occità: "auelhèr" o "oeller".
D’altra banda els mot germànics "Berg" (=Mont), "Berger" (=Muntanyenc), plural Bergers, no tenen relació amb Vergés, que és oxíton.
Un xic d’història: El noms romans múltiples desaparegueren abans del segle VII, si bé la noblesa medieval utilitzava cognoms addicionals per a identificació. Els segles XI i XII s’inicià l’ús de la filiació, o del nom d’ofici, o dels renoms, en funció de cognom (Ponç Bonfill [1017], Pere l’Ermità [1096]); així podrien haver aparegut el primers "bergers" septentrionals. Al segle XIV es popularitzà l’ús dels cognoms, i aparegueren els toponímics (Riera, Serra) que tendiren a designar un llinatge. La persecució del segle XVII contra els hugonots forçà importants emigracions cap al Principat de Catalunya (sobretot després de la revocació l’Edicte de Nantes, 1685) per la qual cosa trobem Vergés escampats per l’Aran i per tots els països catalans. En tot el món hi deu haver unes 8.000 o 10.000 persones amb nom de família Vergés, la majoria als països catalans. The name Vergés is of Catalan or Occitan origin. Etimologically, it
comes from the Latin "viridiarium" (=little wood), thorough the common Catalan
name "verger", plural "vergers" [= "Orchard with variety of flowers and fruit-trees.
Home garden" ]. Also come from the Gasco-occitan "vergèr" and the Lenguadocian
occitan: "vergièr", of the same meaning. It is equivalent to the Castellan
"vergel". The plural "vergers" dominate over the singular "verger" because those
were frequently enclosed and grouped.
As indicated above, in the Catalan countries the singular "Verger" is a lineage.
This is not the case of plural "Vergers", which adopts the form "Vergés",
the most frequent all. The forms Bergés, Bargés; and Vercher (València)
are less frequent. "Vergez" is exclusive of France, where it was introduced
during the Revolution, when the suffix -s was transformed to -z to force the
right oxiton pronunciation of the name in the Francophon regions.

The French word "berger" is originated by the Latin word "verdix" (=ship) > berdix (ship). Then berdicarius (shepherd) > bergarius > berger (shepherd, pastor).
From "bergers" come some French patronimics, not related to "Vergés". There are some similar family names: Catalan "oveller", "vaquer", "bover", etc; Occitan: "auelhèr" o "oeller".
Neither the Germanic "Berg"(=Mount), "Berger" (=mountaneer, plural "Bergers"), nor the French "berger" (=shepherd) can originate the oxiton Vergés.
A bit of history: The multiple names used by the Romans disappeared before the VII century for the low classes. In the XI and XII century started the use of the filiations, occupations, or nicknames as second names (Ponç Bonfill [1017], Pierre l’Ermite [1096]). That way the French family name "Berger" could appear in the north of France. In the XIV century the use of the names spread over the popular classes. Many toponyms, as "vergers", tended to designate lineages.
Well after, the XVII century prosecution in France against the Calvinists ("hugonots") induced important migrations to the Catalan Principat (mainly after the revocation of the Nantes Edict, 1685). From then, we find Vergés in the Aran and all Catalan countries. Probably there are 8.000 o 10.000 people with family name Vergés all over the world, most of them in Catalan countries.
